CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The notion festered in my mind, taking root and growing like a sapling in barren soil. Could Baka have deceived me? I didn’t want to believe it, but as I remembered his sly words, the possibility seemed real. Did I dare hope that I could shift?

I shook my head doubtfully. “Nothing happened when I tried back in the dungeon. Princess Lyra said the magic works differently here, and she didn’t think I would be able to change into a dragon.”

Justice hugged me. “She might not have known, or Baka may have cast a spell to stop you from shifting.”

Jonas kissed me softly. “Or it could be a mental roadblock. You need to trust that you can do it and believe in yourself.” He glanced at the pack of shadow wolves waiting nearby, his gaze full of meaning. “Obviously, the shadow wolves were confident you could shift.”

My eyes lingered on the spot from where the shadow wolves had melted away. Doubt crept in, and with it came a chilling thought. “What if that’s not it at all?”

Jonas scrunched his forehead in confusion, “What are you talking about?”

I met his gaze, searching for understanding. “What if they didn’t sense my dragon, but they sensed Baka?”

His head snapped around as quickly as a whip, scanning the surroundings for any sign of danger. The group followed suit, their gazes darting from place to place like prey trying to evade a predator. If Baka was lurking in the shadows, he remained hidden from our view.

I studied each shadow, trying to see if I could make out Baka. But he was a shadow dragon and a master at hiding himself in the darkness.

I took a step back, creating a slight distance between Jonas and me. He seemed to understand what I was doing as he moved to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me, his posture alert and ready for combat.

The air around us stilled, the oppressive silence pressing down on us with increasing weight. No birdsong, no sound of creatures rustling in the bushes, not even a whisper of wind. Only an eerie quiet that seemed to stretch on for ages.

The trees were stark against the black night sky, their twisted branches swaying ominously in the faint moonlight. In every shadow, I imagined wings and claws waiting to pounce. A feeling of dread hung in the air as if something evil lurked nearby.

Kog tightened his grip on his ax, his gaze darting between the shadows. “I don’t sense any danger,” he suggested. “But we are in the Unseelie Realm, and anything is possible.”

My heart pounded as I remembered what Baka had done to us before. He was a threat that couldn’t be ignored, but why had his minions fled? The air seemed chillier as if an unearthly force had sucked away all the warmth. An uneasy feeling washed over me, and perspiration trickled down my spine as I realized we may never know.

“Maybe you’re right.” Awstin rubbed his chin, his gaze distant. “Maybe Baka has no influence over the shadow wolves.
